The Dell Vostro 1720 is a convenient business laptop purposely made for companies that have limited workspace but not necessarily lesser workload. While it’s expected that it will be heavier than its 15-inch cousins, the Dell Vostro 1720 is lighter than other 17-inch rival laptops.

Entry-level specs for the Dell Vostro 1720 of the Dell Vostro laptop series consist of Intel Celeron 900 for the processor and 160 GB for space storage; but can be upgraded to tailor to the needs of its users. Depending on the user’s need, a variety of configuration is available. If one wants a desktop replacement unit, Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66 GHz and 128 GB Solid State Drive are recommended.

Aside from handing office applications, the Dell Vostro 1720 could also perform a wide range of graphics manipulation such as design work, photo editing, video editing and 3D rendering once upgraded from an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD to NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS.

PROS

The most convenient feature of Dell Vostro 1720 is that it makes multi-tasking easier to perform. Having a large display resolution of 1920×1200 backed by Nvidia 9600, Dell Vostro 1720 gives users the chance to experience great video viewing and awesome gaming. In addition, the machine’s specifications can be configured to fit one’s computing needs and budget, unlike other laptops in the same category.

The Dell Vostro 1720’s keyboard is touch-sensitive and responsive, suitable for immediate and speedy tasks.

CONS

Being a business laptop, the Dell Vostro 1720 may not quickly catch the attention of fashion-forward consumers. Its glossy finish on top and a matte finish give the Dell Vostro 1720 a business aura but falls short of giving it a fashionable look.  But more pressing than that is the Dell Vostro 1720’s weight, which would turn away most potential buyers.

The Dell Vostro 1720 does not score high with regards to rendering 3D graphic and digital video output, even with a Nvidia 9600 graphics card.  A gamer will not be able to play the latest 3D game on this laptop.

Due to lack of digital video output, the Dell Vostro 1720 may not be able to play DVD.  It also lacks eSATA port.

CONCLUSION

The Dell Vostro 1720 is a portable computing device that offers high-resolution screen suitable for multi-tasking. It could perform a variety of tasks and functions a desktop is able to offer, except that it is not handy. Its weight is a problem for most people. This laptop would be a good match to people who only use it for purely business purposes. Otherwise, it would leave users disappointed due to its limited features.
